We're going

First Class

All the way to Heaven!

Patti LaRue and Darlene Greiner of the Pastoral Council along with Mary Kapelczak are leading the committee for the 54 Years A Celebration of Joy and we are asking you to give us a helping hand. The purpose of this event is to bring us all closer as a community as we experience God's love for us. It is our hope as a church community that we can use this event as a community outreach to all! That is why this event is open to the public and not just our own personal family here at St. Joseph the Worker. We want to encourage everyone to come and enjoy the festivities and to learn more about the loving grace that God pours on us on a daily basis. This is also an opportunity for our fellow parishioners to not only partake in the days activities but to also reach out to those whom we don't know. By joining us as a volunteer for this event, you're not only helping the event to be a success but you are also helping to spread the love of God to perhaps 1,000's of people. Now that's BIG!

The celebration will take place on Sunday, September 21st, 2008 and will begin at 9:00 am. Below is a list of planned activities for the day:

  • Mass at 9:00 am ~ This will be the ONLY mass of the entire weekend. In attendance along with Fr. John will be the Archbishop, Monsienjor O'Donovan, Fr. Chester, Fr. Flach.

  • Food Vendors 11:00 am to 6:00 pm ~ A variety of food vendors will be available for you eating pleasure. (There will be special coupons available in the Parish Office for those who would like them. There will be a limit of 2 per family)

  • Face Painting 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

  • Prayer & Event Balloons 11:00 am to 3:00 pm ~ Will be on sale during the event. By purchasing a Prayer Balloon you'll helping the church as well as being given the opportunity to share in a community event of writing your prayer to God and attaching it to a balloon and releasing it sending it on it's way to heaven. :-) The event balloons will be mylar balloons with hand written caligraphy "They danced, they sang, they had a jubilee! Sept. 21st, 2008!"

  • Gift Shop 11:00 am to 3:00 pm ~ A variety of items will be on sale including Father Johns book!

  • Talent Show 11:30 am to 1:30 pm ~ Everyone is welcome to try out for this fun event! Auditions will be held August 17th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the church basement! This is NOT a competition, you will not be judged, so no pressure!

  • Catholic Jeopardy 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm ~ Sign up for a challenging game of Catholic Jeopardy and see just how much you know or don't know about the Catholic faith. A prize will go to the winner with the highest score!

  • Old Fashioned Concession Stands 11:00 am to 5:00 pm ~ Cotton Candy, Popcorn & Sno Cones

  • Kiddie Carnival 11:00 am to 3:00 pm ~ Should be loads of fun for both parents and kids!

  • Event Raffle 11:00 am to 3:00 pm ~ Tickets will be sold until 3:00 pm. The drawing will be held at 3:00 pm. There will be a Grand Prize (TBA) and a variety of smaller prizes.

  • Historical Exhibit All Day ~ This will be up on display in the Social Room.

  • Free Concert 4:00 pm to 7:00 or 7:30 pm ~ The URLVD Choir will be performing as the opening act for Matt Maher! That's right Matt Maher! KFIS radio will have a booth during the event leading up to the concert where lucky winners from their radio contest will have the opportunity to meet Matt in person.
  • As you can see from the list above, there will be a lot of things going on throughout the day and this is why we need your help! The key areas that need help are listed below:

  • Historical Exhibit ~ This exhibit by far needs the most help. We need people to come to us and share their stories or favorite memories they have about St. Joseph the Worker whether you've been here 50 years or 5 years, we need your stories!

There are two ways to submit your story.
    1. Click Here to use our online story form.
    2. Click Here to print out the form to hand into the Parish Office. All submissions must be in no later than August 1st, 2008

We also need you to share your photos with us for display as well. If you can't help with that, we could use your help in setting up the exhibit the night before.

  • Set Up ~ We need people that would be willing to help set up for Mass, Face Painting, Prayer Balloons, Gift Shop, and the Kiddie Carnival.

  • Volunteer Workers ~ Will be needed to man the Prayer Balloons, Gift Shop and Event Raffle. These will be only 1 hour shifts so we need 6 people for each of these events.

  • Clean Up ~ We need people that would be willing to help clean up after the event and make sure all rental equipment is in good shape for return.

  • Talent Show Volunteers ~ You got a talent you'd like to show off? Then here's your opportunity! Registration forms must be turned into the Parish Office by August 10th

Please, if you feel you could help out in any manner please fill out the form below or feel free to call Patti, Darlene, or Mary regarding this matter. With your help, we can make this event the biggest thing St. Joseph the Worker has ever done! Remember, this event is open to the public! And that's why it's so important that we get all the help we can get!

    Parking WILL be an issue!

This is why we highly recommend that you walk if you live close enough to do so, or car pool as well as utilizing Tri-Met. Parking right on the church grounds will be extremely limited especially in the parking lot where most of that will be for handicapped by permit only. These permits will be available at the Parish Office, date of release TBA later in the bulletin. If you fail to get a handicapped permit and are coming with someone else, there will be a drop off and pick up zone directly in front of the church entrance, which will be open all day during the event. We have also arranged to acquire some parking outside of public street parking, from the following listed below:

You may park anywhere on any public street as long as you DO NOT block residences driveways. DO NOT park in anyone's driveway.

    Fred Meyer
Western section of the parking lot starting at the east end of the garden section going west. Approximately 115 parking spaces minus some spaces for Hollywood Video and Papa Johns Pizza.

    Petco
East of the Petco building except for the parking spaces against the East side of his building (they have classes on Sunday for pets, and he said those parking places will be used). Approximately 50 spaces.

    Harold Oliver Elementary School
    15811 SE Main St

Harold Oliver Intermediate School (behind the Elementary School)
15840 SE Taylor St (enter from 162nd & Taylor)

Living Hope Baptist Church (parking available after morning services)
    3130 SE 148th Ave

Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church (parking available after morning services)
    1740 SE 139th Ave

We may also get places further away, which then means we would be setting up a shuttle service. Please check back often to see if new parking areas have been added.
