"Thus says the Lord God"

Isaiah 29:17

Surrender to yourself and die or surrender unto the Lord for eternal life.

As a priest I am constantly thinking about surrender. Am I surrendered? Are they surrendered? Who’s following who and where is that leading?

It is not atypical for a couple who comes to see me and wants to get married to be co-habitating. Have they ever really consulted God about how they are to live their sexuality as they prepare for the sacrament? Did they know that they did not create marriage and God is the Lord and Director of how they are to live out their life-long covenant? “Thus says the Lord God.”

The goal of the Christian’s life is to surrender to the Lord and Director of all things. I think about how we will end things like the holocaust of taking life in the womb. How will we embrace life from the moment God kisses the soul and unites it with a body in the mother’s womb? It comes down to a matter of surrender to God. Surrender will teach us that that life is a human being in the womb and that God has all the rights over the mother’s body and the baby has the right to life. All this knowledge comes by surrendering to God.

Ultimately, everything you think, say and do does not belong to you. God is the Lord and Director of it all.
