"In his days Judah will be saved, Israel will dwell in security"

Jeremiah 23:6

Do you know what the scripture reading was in mass the day the stock market crashed in the early 1980's? It was the parable about a rich man who had a good harvest. He pulled down his grain bins to build larger ones so he could live a life for himself of relaxing, eating, drinking and enjoying. But God comes to him and tells him what a fool he is because his life will be required that night. Jesus teaches that this is how it ends for one who grows rich for himself instead of growing rich in the sight of the Lord. (Luke 12:13-21)

Everything we see is passing. Our homes we live in, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, the mountains we climb, the bodies that house our souls. Like the stock market in the early 1980’s, it is all going to crash. What kind of security can we have in a world that is passing and insecure?

If we are so blessed to have health insurance it can certainly help us to live a longer life here on earth. However, being able to live 70 years instead of 50 years does not provide much security if we think that is all there is to our lives. Our bodies are passing. Take a look in the mirror. We all know that in just a few moments (relative to eternity) our hearts will no longer be beating.

Jesus points out that it is not wealth or possessions or, for the sake of our discussion, the ability to buy health insurance, that will secure our lives. He says, "A man may be wealthy, but his possessions do not guarantee him life." Luke (12:15). We need another kind of insurance to find security in this passing world. We need eternity insurance.

What is seen is passing and what is unseen lasts forever. The unseen Jesus is our eternity insurance. He tells us that if we accept his Lordship and salvation, we will live forever. Having a relationship with him is our only guarantee of life without end.

So, if there only way to have the security of eternal life is in the unseen Jesus, how do we do that? Isn’t that the key question of our existence? How do we come to see the unseen Jesus? In such an insecure world is our eternity insurance policy up to date?
