Christmas Eve
December 24, 2007
"In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us."
Luke 1:78

We are all seekers. Seemingly insatiably and incurably, we seek all the day long. Something is amiss and we want to find it. What is it that we are seeking in all that we are seeking? What gives us rest in our seeking?

"In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us."

We were created by perfection for perfection. Sin fractured the perfect masterpiece of the Creator's creation and so began our restless seeking. The broken creature seeks. We long for perfection, to be that masterpiece our Creator intended. St Augustine talked about this seeming incurable seeking, "You have made us for You, O Lord, and our souls our restless until they rest in You."

The Good News about our restless seeking is that we can find. "In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us."

In our heart there is a God-shaped hole. There is only one person who can fill it and that is God. We can try to fill it by putting other people in there, like our spouse or the one we love the most, but that will always leave us restless and still seeking what will work. It is like trying to put a square peg into a round hole. It will simply never work.

What about the God-shaped hole in your heart? How much time do you care for it each day? Each week? Like putting a square peg into a round hole, seeking the perfect answer in imperfect sources will never work.

The perfect answer has come to be the answer to our seeking. That is what Christmas is about. "In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us."

Seek the perfect from The Perfect and see how your God-shaped hole is filled with the tender compassion of Jesus.

Infinitely blessed!

+ Fr. John
