"
Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him: 'If you live according to my teaching you will know the truth and the
truth will set you free.'"...(John 8:31)
In the bible truth is defined as the reliability of God's love. When all is said and done, what in life is
reliable? Can you name anything else we can rely on but God and what he does for us in love? I was at
an NBA game the other night watching one of the best players, if not the best, on the planet and I know
how much he is worshipped in this world. I thought about how reliable his body, money and fame is going
to be in one hundred years.
I discovered truth growing up in large part due to my parents. Personally, one of the greatest things they
ever did for me was to sacramentalize me. The way I sometimes describe it is that they just kept throwing
me at the altar and into the confessional. I was somewhat open to the life of the sacraments and I grew in
discovering the reliability of God;s love there. More and more in my heart, every time I received those
sacraments I grew in the living experience that Jesus loved me perfectly in them. I found truth in Jesus
and that he was the only person who could be eternally reliable for me. I know my body fame and whatever else
I have will be gone in one hundred years and the only one who can keep me going is Jesus.
When the reliability of God's love washes away our sins, Jesus opens the door for us to walk into eternal life.
The Christian faith is shocking, revolutionary and unique compared to every other religion in the world.
Never before or since has God become one of us so that we could be one with God. God sends us his Son to save
us from our sins and offer us to live in his own life which has no end. This offer is all a gift from God to us.
No other God's offer the gift of eternal life. This, my friends, is the truth that sets us free.
Think of all the things in your life that offer you "happiness" and "life". It might be the sleek car or body,
money, sex, power, etc. Whatever you are thinking of, has it ever offered you eternal life? I do not know who
or what has ever offered me eternal life save Jesus Christ. And that is what we want. We want that truth and
reliability because we all know how unreliable everything else is going to be in one hundred years. So, let
us call a spade a spade and think about where we are going for "happiness" and "life.""
In the end, there is only one thing reliable in this life. It is Jesus - the only person who has ever offered
and won for us eternal life.
