"Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked."...(Pslam 1:1)

There you have it. The very first verse of the book of Psalms. Maybe we can look at it as the foundation on which everything else is built. If not done in the Lord, if not built on his counsel, all is for naught. Let us go to Psalm 127:1-2, "Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vein who build. Unless the Lord guard the city, in vein does the guard keep watch. It is vein for you to rise early and put off your rest at night, to eat bread earned by hard toil—all this God gives to his beloved in sleep." Jesus reiterates this truth when he teaches that we will be happy if we build our lives on a solid rock (i.e. Jesus) that will keep us safe in all the storms and buffeting of life. But our lives will come tumbling down if we build our lives on the sand of foolish counsel.

Consider a button down vest. Say there you are in a hurry to get it buttoned up (which I know is never the case, correct?) but the first button you button does not match the buttonhole to which it belongs. In that case scenario, you will never get it buttoned right. Are you in that case scenario with the absence of seeking God's counsel in your life? The Good News about our faith is that you can unbutton and start over again if we have been living our lives according to foolish counsel resulting in the tumbling down effect.

So, my Beloved, where is the wise counsel to be found? What about the words of Jesus in silence, prayer and scripture? The teaching of the church? Wise, holy people? Where else? How much wise counsel do you seek each day?

We have 1,440 of these every day. Do you know what I am talking about? Minutes- that is how many we are given each day. Each one is a gift in which we can find wise counsel- even when we are sleeping!

If we do not start with the right button in the right buttonhole, if we do not start with the wise counsel of God to direct all we do, our vests and lives will never really work. The merciful opportunity we have right now, if need be, is to unbutton the whole vest and start with the right button of God's counsel in the right button whole and the rest of the vest of our lives will work as God planned it.

Blessed by the BEST,

+ Fr. John
