Thursday of the Third Week of Lent Feb 28, 2008

"But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed.”

Jer. 7:24

He came to bring us back! We chose ourselves over heaven and Jesus came to be born one like us in all things but sin so we could be brought back. Are we letting him? Are we letting him take possession of our lives? Now, usually when we hear the word possession, we think of someone being possessed by the devil. Let us think of “possession” in a new way. Let yourself be “possessed” by the Lord. Let Jesus take over your life and fully direct it. Like the Burger King slogan, “Have it your way!” let us say that and mean that to Our Lord Jesus Christ. Give up all your feeble attempts to control and let Jesus direct you to your destiny.

Imagine a chess piece on a chessboard. Maybe that chess piece is Jesus. We move Jesus around and tell him where to go. We control him and what he does. How much is this your story? Jesus, go there, be quiet, leave the room. Jesus, you are not allowed to be around when I am being unfaithful to my spouse, family and friends. Jesus, cover your ears now because I am gossiping, lying or destroying the reputation of another through my words. Jesus, you are not allowed to watch with me what I am watching on TV, the Internet, this movie.

Now, imagine yourself as the chess piece. As the chess piece, you say and mean to Jesus, “Have it your way! You are invited to direct all I think, say and do. You move me the way you want to move me, when you want to move me. I am your possession. You are bringing me back to heaven and I will wholly trust you to do that. You will lead me to live in your fidelity and saving love.”

Is Jesus the chess piece that you move around all over the place or are you the chess piece that you let Jesus move?

Be Possessed! You do not belong to you. You do not make you. You belong to Jesus and he makes you. You are the chess piece he moves.

God’s will!
+Fr. John
