Jesus said, "The healthy do not need a doctor, sick people do."...(Pslam 5:31)
The church is a hospital for souls.
Friends were around me, anxious for me to unwrap a Christmas present. I needed a knife to do
so and let us just say that the knife found its way to my finger as well. It was Christmas Eve
and I ended up in the emergency room getting 3 stitches (in honor of the Trinity - every time you see three,
think TRINITY). Oh JOY! It was so obvious I needed medical attention.
Story two. It was snowing. From across the street I was watching an elderly man with a cane get off the bus
when he fell on the ice. Thank God I saw several people help him up. It was apparent to me that this elderly
man who was already unstable (using a cane) was going to have a difficult time maneuvering the ice. I prayed
for him.
Physical needs can be so obvious and apparent. Your finger bleeds red or an elderly man with a cane falls
in the snow. But what about our souls? Snow is a beautiful, pure blanket but beneath its outward glow there
can be litter and mud. What about the smiles we smile as we try to persuade the world that everything is all
right when we know well it isn't?
We can be so good at hiding our souls. Are you? We flash the smile but deep down we are aching for healing,
love, and hope. Jesus came for souls. He established the church to be a hospital for souls. The care of
souls has been entrusted to the church. It is a place where all people can be healed in the love of Jesus.
A few points to ponder. Have you hidden your soul from Jesus and others in the church so as not to be healed?
How have you experienced healing in the hospital for souls - the church? So many people seem unwilling to
expose their souls - why is that? How can we, as a church, invite those people into the greatest healing of
all - the healing of our souls? How can you do that? How do you do that now?
