Not in Attendance: Darlene Greiner, Lillian Erwin, Lynette Loumena

Opening:

Father led the group prayer prior to breakfast at 9:00 am

David Mastroieni called the meeting to order at 9:30 am

Round Table:

Discussed state of the Parish.

The need for parishioners to become more involved with the church community outside of mass.

Don't wait for people to volunteer to do things, approach parishioners and ask them if they would like to volunteer for a church activity or ministry.

Discussed the importance of the church being a community and to grow within it.

The need to stress the importance of prayer to parishioners.

Important to stress that involvement in church shouldn't be just to do something but should also be stressed that the spirituality of it all should be maintained as well when volunteering for a certain event or ministry.

The need to reach out to the community outside our Parish was discussed and how we as Catholics need to be more sociable in that manner.

Who are we trying to reach within our own church community?

Youth group was discussed. Attendance was higher. Discussed the importance of keeping the youth group going.

Discussed the importance of continuing the events and activities that have been started since Father has been here after he is no longer with our Parish.

Remind parishioners that God must be the heart of all activities.

Discussed how the three different masses are worlds apart and that they all need to be approached differently.

Importance of evangelizing within our own church as well as outside of the church.

Cliff Jensen suggested the St. Joseph the Worker brochure should be updated and printed out again to give to visitors, parishioners and to mail out to those who have not been to church in some time.

New Business:

Fr. John discussed the importance of prayer and wants to start a Prayer Campaign, which he will kick off the weekend of October 20th and 21st.

Prayer Campaign Committee:

1.Will be led by Patti LaRue and Mike Caldwell.
2.Campaign name will be Pray All-Ways.
3.Cliff Jensen will be in charge of having “Pray All Ways” buttons and T-Shirts made.
4.Mike Caldwell and Patti LaRue will enlist the help of the Prayer Group and others to be on the Committee.
5.Mike Caldwell will create a campaign outline and time line for the committee to follow.
6.The committee will be responsible for the following:

  • Call parishioners and ask them how we can help them with their prayer life and ask them how we can help them feel more part of the church.

  • Organizing people to give testimonies on how prayer has changed their lives and give the testimonies at all three masses.

  • Visual Aides to remind people to pray...Banners “Pray All Ways”, “Pray All Ways” on reader board.

  • Ask parishioners to fill out cards with their written testimonies on them and put them on the church bulletin board, in the bulletin and on the website.

  • Design a brochure about prayer that can be given to parishioners as well as mailed out to them along with Father's writing on how to pray.

  • Get parishioners to commit to praying daily by having them sign a card that says “I commit myself daily to Christ in prayer.”.

  • The committee will be committed to making sure campaign runs for 6 months to a year.

  • Campaign needs to be ready to be launched by next council meeting on November 7th.
  • Mike Caldwell talked more on the Social Justice issues.

Discussed the Archdiocese's Social Justice website and the events they have planned.

Discussed handout on “Themes of Catholic Teaching” as related to Social Justice.

Discussed the importance of needing to make parishioners aware of community issues.

Discussed Social Justice issues our church is doing well with, reaching out to the poor and homeless such as the Homeless Outreach program and the Hats and Scarves program. Felt that other issues should be brought to the parishioners attention such as:

    1.Immigration issues.
    2.Broken homes.
3.Soldiers and their families and the issues they face.
4.Bill Standley mentioned the idea of care packages being sent to the soldiers.
It was decided that a Social Justice committee would be started at the church and that Mike Caldwell and David Mastroieni will head the committee and identify who might be willing to serve on this committee.

The Social Justice Committee will be responsible for:

    1.Organizing quarterly community issue events.
2.Posting the community issue events in the bulletin and on the website on a quarterly basis.
3.Letting parishioners know of any community issue events that are being held at other churches or centers should they like to attend those.

The spaghetti dinner was discussed and the need for someone to step up and take over for Dan and Lynn Baisley. Was suggested that the Knights of Columbus assure them that they will be there to help whomever decides to take over the spaghetti dinner.

Father agreed to call Dan Baisley to see where they might be at in getting someone to take over for them.

It was also suggested that the council invite someone to take over instead of waiting for someone to volunteer.

Will hold off on printing a new Parish directory until Father knows whether or not he'll be staying longer at St. Joseph. Will know in a few months on this issue.

    Adjournment:

Next meeting: November 7th, 6:00 pm in room 3.

Father John led the closing prayer.

    Meeting adjourned at 11:45 AM.
