Everytime I see the 50+ years phrase, it makes me think it's a group of senior citizens or people in their 50's. Frankly, I've always been uncomfortable with this 50+ years term. I know we missed the 50th year. Why don't we call it like Golden something. So what if it's not exactly 50 years ago that St. Joseph parish was founded. I think 50+ years is awkward.

Actually it's called "50+ Years A Celebration of Joy" We did have Appreciation in there but that's just too long especially for the promo t-shirts LOL. And the historical exhibit is what stresses what the event is all about. That's why Father thinks it's so important to gather stories from as many parishioners that we can to share with the whole community by displaying these stories at the exhibit.

This is much ado about nothing but this thing has been bothering me. I have no problem with A Celebration of Joy and Appreciation. What I find awkward, weird or funny is the plus sign after 50. Looks like a celebration where the kids, the teens and young adults are not invited. Only the baby boomers who are 50+ yrs. old can attend. We missed the 50th anniversary, so why not call it what it really is? 54 yrs(or whatever), A Celebration of Joy and Appreciation. One has to be a member of the historical committee to know when our parish was founded. Frankly, I myself don't know how old the parish is. The people don't know. Now is the time to educate them by calling it 54, (or 51, 52, 53, 55, 56 whatever) years. 50 is just a number that happens to be a magical number. So what if 54 is not divisible by 5 or 10.
Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Vancouver is also celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The actual anniversary date is Nov. 14th but they're celebrating on Nov. 15th. 2008 minus 50. Well you know right away, 1958 was the year their parish was founded. But in the case of St. Joseph's, 2008 minus 50+. Well noboby knows the answer.
I disagree with all of you that this is a once in a lifetime event. If this is successful, we'll think of celebrating a big one again, maybe on the 60th anniversary. How many years will that be from now?. Nobody knows, because we keep on calling it 50 plus years.
And finally, I'm not going to use the celebration logo on the coffee mugs, tote bags, and neckties, mouse pads, and other surprise items that I will donate to the gift shop because I hate that 50+ yrs reference. I'll call it what it is. 54 (or 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, whatever).

I will bring it up at the June meeting and put it to a vote. I shouldn't just change something without a concenus from the rest of the group.

Using 54 years would be interesting because I beleive that the building was established in 1954, therefore, 54 year celebration would correlate with 1954.
